Laser Dentistry
Cutting-Edge Technology From Versa Wave Technologies
Dr. Hartman’s office now offers cutting-edge technology with Laser Dentistry using the latest equipment from Versa Wave Technologies. The laser works by using energized water droplets that allow staff to gently and precisely work on dental procedures with no pain or heat. The laser dental system helps sterilize as it cuts, leaving less chance for bacteria contamination. It prepares teeth for maximum bonding of tooth colored enamel with absolutely NO anesthesia.
Advantages to Laser Dentistry Include:
- Ability to place many fillings without local anesthesia
- No high-pitched whine or vibration from the grinding of a drill
- Sterilization of the tooth as it removes decay and reduction of recurrent decay under old fillings
- More effective sealants because the laser removes any debris which can cause decay from the pits and grooves of the biting surfaces
- More effective non-surgical gum treatment because lasers can sterilize pockets painlessly.
- Treatment of canker sores and cold sores
- More effective surgical procedures because there is no bleeding and the surgical field is sterilized by the laser
- No numb lip after patient leaves the dental office
- Desensitization of teeth
Our office has been highly trained on this new procedure and welcome patients to experience the benefits of laser dentistry. Please call our office for an appointment.
Oral Health Awareness Campaign
Dr. Jeffery Hartman is conducting a local awareness campaign to warn consumers about the risks of putting off dental checkups and treatment.
Dr. Jeffery Hartman of Smiles for Life in Huntingdon is launching a local consumer awareness campaign to alert members of the community about the potential risks of postponing dental appointments and neglecting oral health.
According to Dr. Jeffery Hartman, “There’s no denying that the last several years have been tough financially for many Huntingdon residents. The current economic climate is causing many people to either postpone the treatment plans recommended by their dentists, or to put off dental visits altogether. Unfortunately, there are long-term health risks associated with postponing oral care.”
Some of the risks that Dr. Jeffery Hartman is referring to include the following:
Tooth decay is a progressive disease. Postponing treatment can lead to more complex, more expensive treatment, such as a root canal or extraction.
Tooth decay is a communicable disease. Your untreated cavities can be spread to your loved ones.
Recent studies have linked undiagnosed and untreated periodontal disease with a negative impact on patients with heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic health conditions.
Chronic bad breath is usually due to conditions that may be easily prevented by regular oral hygiene appointments and consultation.
“With so many people looking for jobs or worried about their job security, it must be noted that having bad breath and discolored, damaged, or missing teeth are the kiss of death in today’s competitive job market,” explains Dr. Jeffery Hartman. “Your smile is the first thing employers, managers, and co-workers notice.”
“The mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body and its overall health. If more people realized this, they would prioritize their discretionary spending accordingly. Choosing between undergoing periodontal disease treatment and buying a new cell phone would become a no-brainer.”
-Dental professionals are primarily focused on prevention when their patients allow them to do so. However, many wait until emergency conditions such as pain prevail. By this time, the course of treatment is more invasive and costly.
-Most dentists offer third party financing. Ask about how to fill out the paperwork to see if you are a candidate.
-Talk to your dentist about prioritizing your treatment plan. Ask what needs to be done immediately and what can wait until you have more discretionary income.
“Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait is a very important national initiative with the ultimate goal of sustaining and improving oral health in America,” explained Dr. Jeffery Hartman. “I’m very proud to do my part and spread the message within my local community.”
Dr. Jeffery Hartman is a member of American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, American Orthodontic Society, Holistic Dental Association, International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology and the International Association of Mercury Free Dentists. Dr. Hartman is a certified Invisalign (invisible braces) provider. He and his wife Amy are blessed with four children and have raised them in Huntingdon County for the last 30 years.
Are you a dental scaredy-cat?
Are You a Dental Scaredy-Cat?
Dental phobia is a serious, often paralyzing fear of seeking dental care. It has been reported that 50% of Americans do not seek regular dental care. An estimated 15% of all Americans avoid much needed care due to anxiety and fear surrounding the dental experience. This means an estimated 30 – 40 Million people are so afraid of the dentist that they avoid it all together. So if you are a dental scaredy-cat, you are not alone. Although you are not alone, you can overcome this fear.
First ask yourself, why am I anxious and what am I afraid of. People develop anxieties and phobias for many reasons. The most common are pain, loss of control or feeling of helplessness, embarrassment (this is a big one), and negative past experiences. Once you know the root of your fear make a list of things that would help you feel more comfortable while in the dental chair. For example, if you have a fear due to loss of control, empowering yourself with knowledge works very well. Ask the dentist and hygienist to explain and describe to you all procedures before and as the procedure is being done. By doing this, you will not only feel in control because you will know exactly what is going on, it also builds up your trust in your dental professionals.
Never be embarrassed. First, get it off your chest and tell your hygienist you are embarrassed because of your neglect and present condition of your teeth. This will immediately make you feel better if you are in a caring relationship-building dental practice. If you do not get the support you need, look for a new dental office. Remember you are not the only person that has neglected their teeth, and we as dental professionals are just glad you are here seeking treatment.
So you had a negative past dental experience. This also tags along with the top reason people avoid the dentist – PAIN! Good news for you dentistry has changed a lot in the past few years. With the use of lasers, drilling can be eliminated in some cases. Local anesthetic techniques can then make getting numb painless. And if you are still a little nervous nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and conscious sedation may be just what you need. With these two methods you can have pain-free and anxiety-free dental visit. Ask your dentist about nitrous oxide and conscious sedation.
One last technique that can help everyone is deep breathing exercises. Deep breathing is exactly what is says; take big deep breaths through your nose, and exhale also through you nose. Concentrate on your deep breathing and this will naturally help you relax. End Note; Relax, Ask Questions, Express your Fear, Never be Embarrassed, and Ask about all your Pain-Free Options. Schedule an appointment today, and have a great Dental Visit.

J.C. Blair Children’s Health Fair at HCCTC
On Wednesday April 21,2010, Shilo and Tanya attended the annual JC Blair Children’s Health Fair at the Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center from 9:30 to 12:30. 400 Children from area school districts ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade attended the health fair. There were many stations teaching the children things such as fire safety, health and fitness and of course the importance of dental health! Shilo and Tanya educated the children on how to maintain their dental health by instructing them on how to brush their teeth properly, how often their teeth need to be brushed, and how long they should be brushing each time they brush. The children left the Smiles for Life station with a good idea of how to maintain their dental health and with a toothbrush!
Smiles for Life Team attends IAOMT conference!
March 18, 19 and 20 2010, the Smiles for Life dental team traveled to Galloway, New Jersey to attend the spring conference of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. The IAOMT is a network of dental, medical and research professionals who seek to raise the standards of scientific verification of biocompatibility in the dental practice with information from the latest interdisciplinary research. At Smiles for Life Total Health Dentistry, we feel it is a necessity for our entire team to be educated and updated on the newest information available on biological dentistry. Dr. Hartman is an accredited member of the IAOMT.
Together we learned about a variety of aspects pertaining to biological dentistry. On day one, the team spent the day updating our knowledge about biological dentistry as a whole. Some of the topics included the role of mercury in the body, why fluoride is unhealthy for the body and the advantages of using a phase contrast microscope.
On day two, we heard from a variety of speakers who touched on topics such as: dental health’s whole body connection, three dimensional CAT scan screening benefits and dental treatments for Touretts Syndrome. Then, we each attended break out sessions and learned about areas including: the medical and dental etiology of cardiac disease and diabetes from the periodontal perspective, biocompatible dentistry, defending your family in a toxic world and the role of vitamin D in the dentist’s office.
On the final day we learned about the role of vaccinations in chronic disease, heavy metals and oxidative stress and how if affects health, biodetox, and an autism treatment update to be used in clinics. To learn more about IAOMT, please visit www.iaomt.org.
Each day our team gathered for lunch and discussed our opinions and asked questions of each other on the subjects that we had learned about. Our evenings were spent enjoying each others company with a walk on the board walk and great discussions over dinner. While we all learned and were updated on biological dentistry, our trip also allowed us to spent time with each other outside of the work place. This enables us to know each other better and in turn work together as a team of caring individuals who not only care for our patients, but each other as well.
Please feel free to visit our website www.drhartmandentisry.com to learn more about our Smiles for Life Total Health Dentistry team!
The Shocking News about Flouride
When water fluoridation began in the 1940’s it was believed that fluoride needed to be swallowed in order to be most effective. This belief, however, has now been discredited by extensive new research, and you should know the facts. Why is our water fluoridated? To reduced cavities in our children’s teeth. The cover story in July 2000 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association (ADA) states that fluoride ingested during the formation of teeth (before they break through the gums) does not create teeth that are more resistant to decay. Fluoride is an effective means of preventing cavities, but only when applied directly and regularly on the surface of existing teeth topically. Fluoride delivered topically with toothpaste and mouth rinses that are far more effective than when it is swallowed. In November of 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised that parents should avoid giving babies fluoridated water. Even the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states, fluoride “predominant effect is post-eruptive and topical”. According to research done by the World Health Organization, no difference exists in tooth decay between fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries. So I will ask again, why fluoridate the water.
Did you know that for years fluoride has been classified as a toxic waste in this country? And that it’s only approved use, other than our drinking water, is in insectides and RAT POISON. Fluoride is a poison, and that is how your body treats it, as a poison. Fluoride is the most chemically active nonmetallic element of all elements. Which means it reacts with everything. Why would we put this in our water, even if it does prevent cavities! Try better oral hygiene and limit the amount of sugar and starches. The sugar and starches are food for the bacteria that cause dental decay, remove the food the bacteria can not live.
The impact can be seen, literally, in the smiles of our children. Large numbers of U.S. young people—up to 80 percent in some cities—now have dental fluorosis, the first visible sign of excessive fluoride exposure, according to the U.S. National Research Council. (The signs are whitish flecks or spots, particularly on the front teeth, or dark spots or stripes in more severe cases.) According to the National Research Council (NRC), adverse effects from fluoride ingestion have been associated with a risk of brain damage and thyroid activity that can lead to loss of mental acuity, depression, and weight gain. Fluoride can diminish bone strength and increase the risk of bone fracture. Animal and human studies – including a recent study from a team of Harvard scientists – have found a connection between fluoride and a serious from of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) in males under the age of twenty. The National Toxicology Program as “biologically plausible” has described the connection between fluoride and osteosarcoma. People with kidney disease have a heightened susceptibility to fluoride toxicity. The heightened risk stems from an impaired ability to excrete fluoride from the body. As a result, toxic levels of fluoride can accumulate in the bones, intensify the toxicity of aluminum build-up, and cause or exacerbate a painful bone disease known as renal osteodystrophy. These are just a few risks, for more information research online at www.fluoridealert.org/fluoride-facts or www.keepers-of-the-well.org. The American Academy of Family Physicians seems to believe it is still beneficial, although 97% of Western Europe has chosen fluoride-free water due to the side effects of fluoride.
There is a lot of new research on the effects of fluoride. You need to be educated so you can decide what is right for you and your family. Unfortunately even your dentist and hygienist may not be completely informed about the risks of taking fluoride. Remember many dental schools are still teaching their students that fluoride is more of a benefit then the toxic poison that it is. And when you decide take a stand. There is an online petition to end fluoridation and call for a congressional hearing at www.actionstudio.org/public/page. For more information go to www.fluoridealert.com, keepers-of-the-well.org.
