Power Toothbrushes vs. Manual Toothbrushes

According to a study done at the University of New Hampshire, most people do not brush their teeth efficiently, due to improper brushing technique and not brushing long enough. The study showed that a manual toothbrush removes an average of 50% of plaque from smooth tooth surfaces and less than 25% from between the teeth, this is not a good track record for the good old manual toothbrush. On the other hand, the power brush removed 94% of plaque from smooth surfaces and 67% from between the teeth. So yes, you still have to floss daily. On a two minute brushing study, the power toothbrush removed 60% more plaque than the manual, in two minutes.

Due to the fact that more plaque and bacteria was removed with the power toothbrushes; they were proven to be superior to manual toothbrushes in reducing gingivitis and periodontal disease. The power toothbrush also was superior in reducing stain and tarter formation. People in the study also had a tendency to brush longer with their power brushes. The power brushes have shown reduction of recession and tooth abrasion. They automatically confer good brushing techniques and 96% of they people in the study preferred the power brush to the manual.

The power toothbrushes are even more beneficial, if you lack manual dexterity, have braces or implants, a vigorous brushing habit that may cause recession, or have periodontal disease. Children love power toothbrushes, and they are safe and effective for them too. As far as I can see the only thing a manual toothbrush as on a power brush is cost. Yes a power toothbrush is a little more expensive, although they are now affordable. A power toothbrush can cost anywhere from $10 to $200, and you can get a manual toothbrush for as little as a dollar.

You be the judge, the stats are out. As for my family, and I we choose “More Power”. I have had an electric toothbrush for seven or eight years and I would not be without it for one day. And I recommend a power toothbrush to ALL my patients. I recommend you give one a try. Happy Brushing!
